Digital Renegade, the most recent album by I See Stars, was released March 13, 2012. I See Stars fans expecting similar work from their two previous albums, 3D and The End Of The World Party, had another thing coming. The third album is much heavier and electronic driven than any of their other work, but still has a pop/rock element. Digital Renegade hit number 45 on the Billboard 200 and top ten on the Alternative Albums Chart, making it the band’s highest charting album to date. It’s definitely a great album, and fans of alternative music, especially Attack Attack!, That’s Outrageous, and Asking Alexandria should give it a listen. The first song I heard off of the album was “NZT48”, and right then I was hooked. It’s one of those songs you can play over and over again, without getting tired of it. “Filth Friends Unite” and “Endless Sky” are definitely the heaviest in terms of guitar riffs and electronics, but there are also slower and more peaceful songs, such as the slow electronica “iBelieve.” Lyrically, most of the tracks are about society’s heavy dependence on technology, and a disbelief in leaders, especially in “Filth Friends Unite” with the lyrics “We all live by our own set of rules. Take everything and everyone down with you” and “What if they shut the lights out? So caught up in your digital world… What happens now?” There’s an old saying that is “If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten.” I See Stars pushed the boundaries and progressed from their previous works in the creation of this album. It’s not a complete jump to a completely different genre, however. Previous fans can enjoy it just as much as new fans. I’m looking forward to what the band has coming up for us next.
