During break all anyone talked, tweeted, texted and made statuses about was The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Understandable since the movie finally made it to a Joliet theater and the excitement from the previews returned in everyone’s eyes. It exceeded my expectations and brought tears to my eyes. The movie was about a boy’s dramatic experiences through his young life. It started out with him being a lost freshman, which who wasn’t? He was trying to make new friends and trying to figure out what was going through his head at the same time. As the movie progressed, secrets came out and the main character, Charlie, gained amazing friends that were all named outcasts by their peers. The movie had taken some twists as it got deeper into his life; when he was younger, Sam’s (his crush and bestfriend) life when she was younger and the trouble Sam’s stepbrother and Charlie’s other bestfriend, Patrick, had as an open homosexual boy his senior year.
The movie was from the point of view of a pure wallflower. To explain, a wallflower is someone that simply “sees and understands”. Charlie was obviously the main wallflower, understanding things such as the things people put themselves through for love and affection. As explained in the movie, Charlie’s teacher tells him that people accept the love they believe they deserve. My heart pretty much broke right then and there. It all connected back to Sam, Charlie’s sister with her current abusive relationship and his aunt who had passed away. Charlie is too sweet to let anyone be less than happy. Several examples were performed, but one that stuck out to me the most was when he called Candace, his sister, before he tried to commit suicide. The moment you heard her voice turn hoarse as she screamed her brother’s name, it just made my heart stop and tears welled in my eyes. I know I’m not the only one that would see it over and over again. I say when it’s released the 12th of February check it out!
