Divergent is a well thought out, well written novel by Veronica Roth. The story follows Tris Prior as she ventures through a futuristic Chicago. The population of this border patrolled city is split into five factions: Erudite, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Abnegation. Tris Prior starts out living a selfless life in abnegation but when she turns sixteen it’s her time to take the aptitude test and choose to stay in her faction or move to a new one. The aptitude test comes up negative which means the Tris Prior is divergent. Now being divergent is dangerous, at least in the eyes of Erudite, the faction of knowledge. At the faction choosing ceremony Tris chooses to leave her faction and join the Dauntless where she would train and learn how to protect the city. During her training she meets Four, one of the bravest of the dauntless and, of course, they fall in love. But it’s a weird kind of love, like the kind where he throws knifes at her head and cuts a bit of her ear off. As her time in dauntless goes on though, she grows stronger and becomes one of the top fighters in her group. She is initiated when she passes the final test and becomes a permanent part of the dauntless faction. This story was gripping from beginning to end with action, plot twists, and romance. The book was so popular that they made it into a movie starring Shailene Woodley as Tris and Theo James as Four. The movie stayed pretty true to the novel asides from little bits here and there. There are two sequels to divergent which are Insurgent and Allegiant. I’m sure you can find all three novels at the library or at any book store.
