December 1, 2015
The historical drama/thriller Bridge of Spies is a 2015 movie starring Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump), Mark Rylance (The Gunman), and Scott Shepherd (Side Effects). The film is directed by Steven Spielberg, the well-known director of Jaws, Transformers series, and Indian Jones series. The movie is based on real life events that took place in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s during the Cold War and focuses on Soviet spy Rudolph Abel (Rylance), as he is taken into custody while insurance lawyer James B. Donovan (Hanks), is enlisted to defend and exchange him to get back Francis Gary Powers, a captured U-2 spy pilot.
Based on real-life events the film really tells what was really going on and the real troubles between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. The characters in this film show determination and dedication and especially perseverance. Starting off pretty slow, it still made the movie touching and interesting. It also touches on American patriotism, asking the question, “What makes us both Americans?” Determination plays a huge role in the movie. Hanks’ character simply does not give up. Obstacles repeatedly get in the way of him trying to accomplish his job. This also goes along with dedication, as Hanks is committed to trying to save the supposed spy. This causes trouble with his marriage and fellow American citizens. Because of this, he has to travel all the way to Berlin. Lastly, perseverance. Delays and troubles come at Hanks’ character left and right. And at the end he achieves something even greater.
The movies opened October 16th and rated PG-13. Check it out!
