On September 6, 2024 the long awaited sequel to Beetlejuice by Tim Burton hit the USA big screens. Beetlejuice fans all over are ecstatic to see the Beetlejuice franchise being finally resurrected after a long nearly 36 years from when the first movie “Beetlejuice (1988)” came out. This movie had gone through loads of delays from varying problems but now it’s finally here.
The movie essentially gets rolling with Lydia now being grown up and having to return to her childhood home after her father dies to hold a funeral. Lydia’s daughter accidentally gets tricked by a ghost which results in her falling into a risky situation involving the afterlife. Lydia, wanting to save her daughter before it’s too late, calls upon Beetlejuice to make an agreement. This agreement was her hand in marriage in exchange for saving her daughter. The movie then continues on through the plot of saving Astrid as Lydia also tries to figure out how to get out of the marriage.
To the people it seemed worth the wait as this sequel had one thing you don’t tend to see from sequels anymore. That is the return of original actors like Micheal Keaton, despite being in his 70’s now he had come back to reclaim his spot as the all too terrifying Beetlejuice. Along with two other main actors which were Catherine O’Hara, playing the role of Lydia’s step mother and Winona Ryder playing Lydia herself. New characters were also added such as Lydia’s daughter Astrid, played by the well known Jenna Ortega. Along with Beetlejuice’s ex Delores played by Monica Bellucci.
All in all, this movie has varying reviews based on the fans opinion. Some seem to hate the plot of Lydia making a deal to marry Beetlejuice all together. While others enjoy the movie and its nostalgic charm by seeing the return of things like the sandworms and Beetlejuice’s summoning. But fans seem to be in agreement that it was a tad disappointing that most of the film seemed focused on Astrid rather than Lydia. Either way, this movie is good if you’re a nostalgia fan and want to see your favorite actors bring their roles back from retirement.
