This film is about Walter (Haley Joel Osmet), and how one summer his money-crazed mom Mae (Kyra Sedgwick), leaves Walter with his estranged great uncles so he can find Hub (Robert Duvall) and Garth (Micheal Kain) Mccain’s gold. They have had no responsibilities of taking care of their children now, and Walter is staying with his two uncles–they think that Walter is just a useless kid. However, they grow to care for Walter and he begins to idolize his two great uncles. Walter learns about the adventures and battles that Hub and Garth had in their youth, while gaining insight about the one true love that one of his uncles had and what he would do to protect her from an evil sheik.
This is a film that every person should watch, because the acting that Haley Joel Osmet, Micheal Kain and Robert Duvall give are phenomenal, due to the extraordinarily writing and filming. Tim Mccanlies truly captures the old 50’s look with clothes, cars, and general setting of the film. They also have a group of James Dean wannabes, and the emotion of using the camera in intense close ups of characters. Also, to capture what Walter sees, the action scenes give a heart pounding tone. Tim wrote this movie so well that it felt like this movie wasn’t just a film, but an actual thing that happened. Walter, Hub, and Garth were real people to me. This isn’t just a film, it’s the movie that got me to love film. The way that Robert Duvall’s character Hub stays away from Walter and the characterization that he’s rude but instead full of love and passion is ultimately very important to the movie. Hub becomes the star in this movie instead of everybody else because he shows him there’s more to life than just being a man. I give this movie 8 gold bars, and this is a film that everyone should see. Acting, writing, directing, nostalgia, and the experience help this movie portray a life lesson, and I will see you the next time you want to come back to the movies.
