As managing editor for the third year in a row, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of journalism and the impact of collaboration. This elective has taught me how to improve myself while also helping improve the work of students who need it. Being in such a role requires responsibility and diligence, which I’ve gained and enforced throughout my high school years in not only journalism but also my day-to-day life.
Additionally, this experience has also allowed me to enter new extracurriculars and clubs, such as the National Honors Society and Presidents Club—expanding my reach in the community. During my freshman year, I admittedly wasn’t entirely sure how much I’d enjoy being on the staff for this elective. However, over time, I learned to appreciate the opportunity, and I’ve used it to build new connections while also improving the JTC Journal. Now that I’m a senior, I’ve realized that the time and effort put into things you truly want will always award a more fulfilling outcome, and this year I’m trying my best to stay on top of things and to be the best managing editor I can be for my students and team members. Through trials and tribulations, I’ve overcome preconceived notions about being on the team, and I now find myself satisfied with how things are turning out and am looking forward to the future of the program.
Lately, hiring new editors and recruiting members for journalism has gone better than expected, and it gives me a sense of hope for what will later be published and/or submitted. Overall, over my four years in this program, I can without a doubt say that it has been one of my biggest accomplishments in high school memories I’ll never forget. When reflecting on myself and what I could’ve done better, I never forget to thank myself for what I’ve contributed to the students and staff, while always appreciating myself for who I’ve become and for who I will be in the future.
