Halloween night and the lights are bright, roads are filled with fake blood spills and candy wrappers, as the trick-or-treaters are out to play. The moon stands alone with no stars around it. The house parties are filled with horror and alcohol scents. All a great night with laughter and scares as a couple of young girls are out to enjoy the horror of Halloween night. Dark and cold, but they didn’t care. They want to have fun. As it’s the last night together with each other, the night goes on and the moon gets brighter and clearer for the whole world to see on this Halloween night.
“We should go home before it’s really late.” Maddie Lanes says.
“Sure, we will soon,” says Rose and Courtney at the same time. They think they’re twins and should always speak at the same time. Courtney, the oldest, stops walking and Maddie and Rose stop and turn to see why Courtney has stopped walking. Rose speaks clear and in a happy tone to Courtney. “What’s up? It’s Halloween. Are you scared or something?” Courtney looks at her with a smirk on her face.
“Like I would be scared. I stopped because I saw a house on the left of Lakes Road that looks cool. We should check it out, that’s all.” The others stand where she is and look to the house on the left of Lakes Road. Lakes Road is well known for being the scariest place to go on Halloween. Rose speaks with a sign of fear in her voice.
“Sure, why not? It looks cool from what I can see from here.” Maddie and Courtney turn from Lakes Road to Rose’s face that has fear written all over it. Cold winds blow by and send cold shiver down their backs. Then they set off across the road and Old Towns Bridge onto Lakes Road. Maddie speaks.
“Okay, now that we are here, what house is first?” Rose and Courtney look at each other puzzled, mostly because there is only one house on Lakes Road. Old, broken in windows and blood stains are all over the floor. Rose, Courtney, and Maddie walk towards the old house. As they get closer, they hear the sound of smashed glass hit the floor. They all jump up in fear and utter a loud scream. Courtney shaken up speaks fearfully.
“Okay, it was just glass hitting the floor.” At the same time, Rose and Maddie turn to look at the door. Maddie speaks.
“Yeah, you’re right. It’s just glass. What are we scared of! This is just some stupid prank.” Courtney and Rose turn and look at each other and laugh at what Courtney has just said.
“Okay, let’s get moving then.” Courtney says as she begins walking once again. Maddie smiles.
“Sure thing, let’s go.” Towards the house they go and end up at the bottom of the steps to the porch. There are old bits of rust all over the bottom. They take the steps at a time all together. Just as they are getting to the last two steps, the step they’re on breaks and they all fall. Rose gets up fast and has a cut on her left leg. Courtney and Maddie are fine, just sore feet. They get to the top of the stairs and look down in a sign of relief.
The moon light starts to dim and the sound of Halloween cheers get louder, the bats are out to play, flying around looking for food to eat. Children come home from a great night of getting sweets, and are ready to eat to the point of having upset stomachs. Midnight will soon be upon them and the teenagers are ready to party at the grave yard and scare anyone that passes by that night. The girls look at the old broken windowed door. Maddie gulps knocks on the door. A shallow howl of a wolf is heard, and the girls begin to get frightened.
“I don’t think anyone is home.” Rose says. In her voice, it shows she is cold and uneasy. Maddie and Courtney look at each other. All of a sudden, the old rusted door opens the girls hear a voice call out.
“Come in, come in. It’s Halloween night. Time for fun, time for games… and time for pain.” The girls, frozen solid, stand there looking in to see if anyone is there, but no one is.
“That was odd but, like it said, ‘It’s Halloween night,’ let’s go in and see if we can find anything cool!” Rose suggested.
“Come on, don’t be scared. You have me to keep you safe.” Courtney said, speaking to Maddie.
“It may be Halloween, but whatever that thing is, it said time for pain. What does that mean? What if he or she or whatever will try to kill us? You don’t know! It’s not safe!” Maddie says to Rose, who nods in agreement. They look at Courtney, who is already half way through the door.
“Stop! Don’t go in there! Are you mad or something, Courtney?” Maddie shouts.
“Come on, I’ll be fine, and so will you. It’s the last time we’re together. Come on, it’ll be fun. Trust me.” Courtney turned around and spoke without any sign of fear. After a couple of minutes of pondering, the girls walk through the door. Once they are all inside the house, the door slams behind then giving them a fright. They head towards the front room and open the door that has blood stains all over it. They walk in, one by one not getting too far away from each other. They stand quietly near the window and see a couple of teenage boys head towards the grave yard laughing their heads of and enjoying the night. All of a sudden, a loud bang comes from the upstairs. It seemed as if the sound was coming towards them, pretty fast. The girls get closer together, thinking to themselves that it was a bad idea.
“I think we should get out of here now!” Courtney said, more shaken than ever. The girls run towards the main door, not looking back. They get through and run towards the back door to find it locked. The sign of fear has taken over their bodies. They can’t get out. A black figure walks towards them. They are terrified to move. The Figure grabs Courtney and drags her across the floor into the darkness. She screams very loudly, but only Maddie and Rose can hear and they are already trying to break her free. Maddie and Rose grab her and pull her back not letting go of her for dear life. They pull as hard as the can but no luck.
“Let her go!“ Rose screams at the figure. The Figure bites down on Courtney’s arm as she yelps in pain. Maddie and Rose start throwing things at The Figure and start yelling again. Finally The Figure lets go of her and she hits hear head on the ground. Her arm begins to bleed. She moves slowly towards Maddie and Rose, who help Courtney to her feet. Maddie wraps her jacket around her arm to stop the bleeding. The Figure returns walking closer to them. It pushes Courtney against the wall on the other side of the room.
“What is wrong with you! What do you want from us?” Courtney yells at The Figure. The Figure scratches the wall and a message appears, written with blood. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE. The girls read the message. Maddie and Rose run out of the room and out of the front door and down the steps. They turn around to find Rose nowhere near them. They walk back into the house, not wanting to leave their friend behind. They see The Figure with Courtney in it’s grip.
“Let her go!” Maddie screams at The Figure.
“She’s mine now.” The Figure said, as it strangled Courtney. The Figure vanishes. Courtney drops to the floor, lifeless.
“No! Courtney!” Rose screams. Her sister, best friend, flesh and blood, was now gone. Rose and Maddie ran over to their friend. “Courtney! Wake up, Courtney! Rose screams at her, tears drowning her. Nothing. The Figure reappears.
“Who’s next?” The Figure says.
“Come on, Rose! We have to go!” Maddie says to Rose as calmly as possible. She pulls her arm.
“No, we can’t leave her!”
“She’s gone! Let’s go!” Rose gave in and ran out of the house with Maddie. They ran, ran until they couldn’t breathe anymore. Once they were out and safe, the cops were called. Courtney’s lifeless body was removed. Parents and friends were crying their hearts out. There was nothing that could be said, nothing that could be done, to change the hurt everyone was feeling.
The house on the left of Lakes Road was torn down, following the tragic accident. Every Halloween the neighborhood takes time to visit the area where Courtney had died. Every year Rose and Maddie hear the same horrifying voice The Figure had once spoken.
