The Ascension program at St. Joseph Hospital invited students to join. The program lets students earn 44 hours of community service, as it’s a 14-week program and the student goes once a week for a total of 2-3 hours. Students have to go through an interview after filling out the application and students get to choose what they want to do and what day they come in, students can also shadow. It is a great opportunity for any high school student to take if they need the hours and just want to get them over with.
As the Ascension program is hosted every year, Kelly Kuyawa, the speaker and volunteer coordinator, tries to go to the science club meetings annually. Some of the things she does at meetings are giving a presentation of the program and giving out applications. “I think it is a great opportunity for community service hours and overall experience for Students interested in the medical field”, said Dr. Kline, a Teacher at Joliet Central and sponsor for SNHS and Science Club. It helps the community by helping students stay updated and gives them knowledge of the healthcare field. It will continue being held every year and the volunteer coordinator, Kelly, will continue to talk about it to students. The teachers think it is a great program for students to be involved in. If this program isn’t for you, many other hospitals offer student volunteer positions. St. Joseph alone has other volunteer opportunities.
Overall, The program is a good thing to look into. It will give students the service hours they need, new knowledge, and spark interest. If you are interested now they open up applications for the winter session in early November.
