For years the culinary classroom at Joliet Central has been used for students to learn important life skills and to improve a student’s knowledge in the arts of the food industry. Now with the beginning of the new year, the Board of Education has been made aware of the rooms needing an upgrade and after months of construction Joliet Central now has a new culinary classroom located on the third floor in rooms 384 and 386.
In Joliet Central, the old labs were upgraded for better participation and learning in students. The construction had begun near the end of May 2024 and then on January 6, 2025 people were able to move in and adjust to the space with no setbacks or issues throughout construction.
As construction progressed without push backs the Culinary room arrived at the expected date; giving many students the opportunity to improve their skills in many ways such as; food science, the ability to read through and adjust a recipe to preference, mannerism in serving guests, creating menus and plenty more. Mrs. Heavener, a teacher who instructs two of the Food Fundamentals classes says, “Many of my students end up going to culinary school and then enter the industry.” Which encourages those who are interested in a career linked to the Food Industry; a global system with many connections to several businesses that supply populations with food, to join.
The food industry is the second largest private sector in the United States. There are many career opportunities, not just cooking, some including; food photography, food scientists, hospitality, management, and many more.
With the conclusion of the culinary rooms construction it is encouraged for students to look forward to learning and being able to put their experiences to use. This class can help improve life skills for students interested in new experiences.
