Peoria, IL February 22, 2025- Joliet Central High School’s speech team celebrated a historic achievement as senior Rebecca Hambry and sophomore Ayanna Jackson advanced in the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Speech State Competition. The duo secured third place in Dramatic Duet Acting (DDA) at the competition on February 17, 2025 at Washington Community High School, earning them a spot among the top 20 performances statewide.
The accomplishment marks the fourth time in the school’s history and the third in the past eight years that Joliet Central has been represented at the state competition.The team’s consistent dedication and hard work have culminated in this significant milestone, reflecting the growth and development of the program over the years.
The DDA category consisted of 19 partnerships, showcasing a high level of competitions among the schools. Head Coach Joe Hoyt and Assistant Coach Ashley Samsa accompanied the students to the event. Coach Ashley Samsa remarked, “The State tournament is always a good time. The students performing are incredibly talented, and not only did our students get a chance to compete, but they also were able to see all of the State Champions perform their pieces. It was an incredible opportunity for everyone involved”.
