1976, the year history was made. Black history month is an important month to acknowledge as it helps provide knowledge on the important figures who helped shape the country and laws to be what they are today.
In 1976, February became black history month. What used to be a week-long event turned to a month. It changed to a month due to protests being done during the civil rights movement.
Two Important figures to honor and remember during this month are Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. Malcolm X inspired a powerful group called the Black Panther Party, Malcolm and the Black Panther Party focused on getting more rights by being assertive and taking action. They held protests and breakfast for those who could not get any due to money or personal problems. Martin Luther King Jr. was a MAJOR figure in the civil rights movement, fighting for equal rights to all no matter the color. He was a great leader and led many peaceful protests and gave speeches. “ If you forget history, you are bound to repeat it. Those who fought for the rights of African Americans, and humans in general, created a blueprint for us to follow to achieve human rights.” said Dr. Collins, a teacher at JTHS.
Many people now are grateful to have had these figures create movements and provide more freedom. During the time periods of these figures being alive, many people were not happy. They tried to hurt people of color, their protests, and portrayed them as bad people in the media.
There have been and are still ongoing protests for more rights whether they are for gender, rights, and race. They have inspired many to use their voice for good and not just stay quiet.
Malcom X and Martin Luther King Jr. are important figures to remember. They have contributed to positive changes in everyone’s life and have given more freedom in America “The Land of the Free”.
