This year at the 2014-2015 open house, many of the Joliet Central clubs made an astounding appearance. I was able to attend the open house and take a look at what was on display.
Packed into the bridge of the T&I building, the many AP United States History members were dressed in crazy, gorgeous, and hilarious costumes. Some people were even able to witness the students in action. The energy from the bridge was amazing and full of life. It makes me want to be in a new club.
One group, the ROTC cadets, volunteered for the night and helped families and students with directions to classrooms and exits. As a freshman this year, I knew exactly how those people felt: without a clue as to which way to go, or even where I was. But as students entered each class room, they were greeted by a teacher or two and offered refreshments.
One of the biggest tasks of the night was getting your teachers’ signatures on the little, pink slip of paper so you can win the big raffle. Simultaneously, teachers explain to parents what the subjects are about and hand out copies of the curriculum. Parents ask about their kids and how they’re doing in the class. The students cross their fingers and hold their breath, hoping that their teacher gives a good answer and nothing more. While people wait in line to talk to teachers, kids point out things in the school and classrooms. Some spot friends in the hallways and introduce each other to their parents .
I think we can all agree that this year’s open house was pretty successful and welcoming due to the laughter, the smiles, and certainly the energy. As families head out the front doors, ROTC cadets and staff say “Thanks for coming. Have a good night.” Everyone turns their raffle papers into the bin by the infamous Steelman Statue, and wave goodbye to passing friends. They head to the doors smiling until they hear the dreaded words of your teachers, “See you tomorrow in class!”
