The biggest awards at Central are the Steel Man and Steel Woman awards, which date back to 1976, with our very own Mr. Piazza being a winner in 1990. The awards come with scholarships given to each student who has put in a tremendous amount of effort into high school and has risen to the top and above expectations. This year there are three winners Aspen Barrios, Shatierre Figueroa, and Heather Matenaer, all have well-earned accomplishments. Steel Man Aspen Barrios is very involved in many different clubs and holds many positions such as Co-Vice President of Rho Kappa, National Honor Society, and National Society of High School Scholars. Aspen feels “extremely thankful and full of gratitude for having won this award as I was close to crying on stage the moment my name had been called”. Steel Woman Shatierre Figueroa says “Central definitely shaped how open I am to learning about new cultures” and is very proud of herself and her peers. Steel Woman Heather Matenaer, the National Honor Society President and Steelmen of the Year says “I feel very honored that I was selected out of all of my very qualified peers”, She also feels that Central introduced her to many different opportunities and is grateful for them. While only three students won the award, every graduating student did a wonderful job all four years and all of them will be missed.
