This November, Native American Heritage Month begins! This month is to appreciate all of the Native Americans all over the world! In 1986, President Reagan announced that November 23-30th would be known as “American Indian Week.” Four years later, in the year 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed a joint resolution allowing the month of November to be known as National Native American Heritage Month. Native American Heritage Month allows Native Americans to celebrate their heritage, traditions, languages, and their own unique stories. Every November, we celebrate this special month by acknowledging all of the Native Americans who make a more diverse society. We also acknowledge their contributions to our society. There are several events, podcasts, and also Native-owned businesses that you can support and attend to; to show your appreciation, support the Native Americans, and educate yourself on their heritage.
Native Americans have a major role in economic development. Without them, we wouldn’t have people to handle mining, farming, fishing, and etc. With the exercise of Native American Tribal influence, over the past 30 years, this resulted in economic growth and improved their own well being.
Every year since 2002, Native Americans Heritage Month has always had a theme. Themes are important for Native Americans because it gives them an opportunity to tell their story and what they have accomplished. This year the upcoming theme is “Recognizing 100 Years of Citizenship and the Fight for the Right to Vote.” This is a huge milestone for the Native community because they have been fighting for rights in general along with other people of color for a long time.
Furthermore, this November Native American Heritage Month begins. It is a time to acknowledge their rich culture, stories, and contributions throughout the years.
