The season for Badminton is going great. Varsity has a record of 9 wins- 3 loses. At the Plainfield North Tournament, on April 5th, the team placed 2nd out of 16 schools. “So far, this has been an amazing season.” said Luangsomkham in an interview. Junior varsity and freshmen are having a great season as well. Outstanding players this season include, for Varsity: #1 Doubles team of Angelica Bibian and Andrea Jauregui, #1 Singles Brenna Casey, #2 Singles Jacqueline Fiday, and #3 Singles Maranda Sippel; and for Junior Varsity: #1 Singles Danielle Morgan. “She took 1st place at our Birds of Steel Tournament on March 22. Her record is currently 11-1. The best JV record for #1 singles in all the years I have coached here.” Luangsomkham boasted about the player. When asked about the strengths of her team this season she said the main strength is their top ten line up, which consists of 6 seniors that played badminton for 4 years and 4 juniors that have played on the team for 3 years. When asked about weaknesses the team faces Luangsomkham said that, “…though our athletes are committed to playing badminton during the year…I don’t have any athletes that have played badminton all year round.” She continued to say that it has been tough competing against teams that have athletes who take private lessons or play throughout the year. A constant struggle for the team is “…we sometimes practice better than we play.” Said Luangsomkham. During practices the team is prepared with all the skills they need to be able to win in a match, but at game time some players get intimidated by other competitors and don’t play to the best of their abilities. This season, compared to the last, is much better. Last year varsity only had 3 wins, compared to their 9 this season and they hope to keep improving.
