As we all now the softball season has recently begun and already there are three underclassmen who seem to be the most promising players and are playing important roles on the varsity team. Those players are Brenna Rande, Joana Zepeda, and Megan Kulak. Coach says “the season has started out strong and the team is a great group of girls who work hard and don’t back down from intense competition.” The team leaders are expectedly the three seniors: Autumn Lawson, Selena Velasquez, and Katelyn Farrell. The star players that contribute on defense and offensively this season are Christina Valentino, Hannah Gawenda, Jicara Tate, Ashley Hare, and Shelby Fischer. But what’s different this season “is the great sense of team unity,” as Coach Douglas says, “Each player is not only playing for herself but for the betterment of the team.” Besides interviewing Coach, I also interviewed senior varsity player, Selena Velasquez. She started playing baseball at the age of five for Belmont, then she switched to softball at twelve years old. To get pumped to play for away games, she listens to music on the ride to the game. This season she is looking forward to the team winning more games and working together to become better. The team she’s most looking forward to playing is, our rivals, Joliet West. They are a tough team, but she believes the team has the talent to actually beat them or maybe come close. She hopes to end the season with little to no errors and a .500 batting average. She is setting her goals high this year seeing as it is her last. Seems like so far the season is going pretty well and can only get better.
