Track and Field

Jocelyn Montesinos

Track season started in March and so far it is going spectacular. There are both a boys and a girls team for JC with great coaches. This season’s head coaches are Brian Reed for the boys team and Kelly Halusek for the girls teams. Along with assistant coaches Doug Cherry, Mike Heilman, and Tom Hart for the boys team and Neal Brockett, Michelle Vanderhyden and Derrick Martin for the girls team. Track is not just about running. It is about endurance, jumping ability, throwing ability, speed, sprinting, technique and teamwork. The season just started but some athletes have already left their mark. Ari Juarez, Cassie Pina, Amber Singh and Maciah Marszalek broke the record of 4×800 with a 10:44.31. Jabreel Washington set a new record in the long jump with a 21’9.5. Freshman and sophomores have also worked very hard and earned medals at the F/S 7th annual invite. Those are some of the many accomplishments some runners have accomplished. For many, this is their first year in the sport, yet they’ve improved and learned a lot of new skills. It is not an easy sport. This is why track requires hard work and dedication. Athletes should set goals for themselves and do everything they can to reach and exceed those goals. I can already tell this is going to be a great season for the teams.
