Many were interested in this year’s tennis team, with 55 girls showing up to try-outs. It was a difficult choice for coaches to decide who would stay and make the team. Tryouts were on August 12th and 13th at Joliet West. The team is held together with Joliet Central, which means that girls from both Joliet high schools are on the same team. In those days, the coaches put on various drills to test technique and racquet skills.
Coaches have been posting pictures and videos of the team members, Varsity and JV, from the games and practices. The first game with another school was on August 24, it was the only game where JV and Varsity played at the same school at the same time. It was a practice-only game so it was an incredibly great start to the season.
In this season the tennis players had to sell shirts with the Joliet tennis logo. Each student had to sell a minimum of 8 shirts. Not only did this help to buy new tennis gear, but it also made the community aware of the team; now parents and spectators who come to watch the games wear their shirts, showing support. “We have had many outstanding achievements through a record number of girls for try-outs, a high number of t-shirt sales, hosting our first JV quad at Joliet West, recruiting more athletes from Joliet Central, and having a great dynamic on the team,” Coach Brozman said.
The team brings the West and Central community together, with the girls getting to socialize with people from other schools and it creates a nice bond between them. “My main objective for this season is to develop fundamentals skills and create competitive players for our Junior Varsity team and prepare them for Varsity,” said the JV coach.
Finally, the last JV game will take place on October 5, which is the conference match. After that Varsity will continue to have games until IHSA selections on October 18 and 19. Depending on how they do they will move on to state on October 24, 25, and 26. The season officially ends on October 29.
